Tyler shoved his phone back into his pocket and rolled his chair away from the desk that Logan had claimed as his own.

“How come the Superintendent’s gunning for you, boss?” he asked, positioning himself behind the room’s second, far smaller desk. The ‘Lesser Desk’ as Logan had named it when they were sorting out the seating arrangements. Desk Minor.

“Who knows?” Logan asked. “Probably nothing. Or maybe… You know Bosco, right?”

“Bosco Maximuke? The builder with the drug connections?” Tyler asked. “Sorry, ‘alleged’ drug connections,” he corrected, making quote marks in the air with his fingers. “What about him?”

“I’ve got reason to believe he might have been supplying the Gillespies.”

“What reason’s that, boss?”

“Because I know the crooked bastard,” Logan said. “The shot that killed Caitlyn? I think it was meant for him. I think, if it wasn’t for Bosco, DS McQuarrie would still be with us. Course, I’ve got no evidence to back that up. Nothing that would stand up in court, anyway.”

“So… what?” asked Tyler. “Did you go round and accuse him?”

“In a manner of speaking, aye,” Logan said. “In a way.”

“What way would that be, boss?”

“In a ‘leathered shite out of his henchman and burned his office to the ground’ kind of a way.”

Tyler’s eyes became two miniature globes of surprise. “Fucking hell, boss! What were you thinking?”

“I was mostly thinking, ‘I’m going to burn this bastard’s office to the ground,’ truth be told.” Logan clicked his tongue against the back of his teeth and shrugged. “I didn’t really think it through beyond that. Got a bit carried away in the heat of the moment.”

“Jesus, you didn’t kill him, did you?” Tyler asked.

“Of course, I didn’t kill him! Jesus Christ, son, what do you take me for?” Logan barked. He shifted his weight on his feet and shrugged. “I mean, I can’t say I wasn’t tempted. But, no.”

“That’s something. But still, boss.” Tyler’s eyes darted left and right, like he was seeing all the potential consequences of Logan’s actions being played out before him. “That could be career-ending. You could get your cards for that. You could get the bloody jail!”

Logan nodded slowly. Clearly, he’d come to the same conclusion some time ago. “Aye. But I’ll worry about that later. For now, while I still have one, we’ve got a job to do. There’s still a lot of people to talk to, and Bruce Anderson isn’t going to find himself. We get this done, we find out who killed Iona, and then Detective Superintendent Hoon, the PCC, and whoever else wants to throw their oar in can do what they need to do.”

He necked the last of his cold tea, pulled a face, then clonked the mug down on the desk. “Right, you fit? Let’s go see if Roddy Mackay’ll gie’s a swatch of his mucky videos.”
