Tyler shoved his phone back into his pocket and rolled his chair away from the desk that Logan had claimed as his own.
âHow come the Superintendentâs gunning for you, boss?â he asked, positioning himself behind the roomâs second, far smaller desk. The âLesser Deskâ as Logan had named it when they were sorting out the seating arrangements. Desk Minor.
âWho knows?â Logan asked. âProbably nothing. Or maybe⦠You know Bosco, right?â
âBosco Maximuke? The builder with the drug connections?â Tyler asked. âSorry, âallegedâ drug connections,â he corrected, making quote marks in the air with his fingers. âWhat about him?â
âIâve got reason to believe he might have been supplying the Gillespies.â
âWhat reasonâs that, boss?â
âBecause I know the crooked bastard,â Logan said. âThe shot that killed Caitlyn? I think it was meant for him. I think, if it wasnât for Bosco, DS McQuarrie would still be with us. Course, Iâve got no evidence to back that up. Nothing that would stand up in court, anyway.â
âSo⦠what?â asked Tyler. âDid you go round and accuse him?â
âIn a manner of speaking, aye,â Logan said. âIn a way.â
âWhat way would that be, boss?â
âIn a âleathered shite out of his henchman and burned his office to the groundâ kind of a way.â
Tylerâs eyes became two miniature globes of surprise. âFucking hell, boss! What were you thinking?â
âI was mostly thinking, âIâm going to burn this bastardâs office to the ground,â truth be told.â Logan clicked his tongue against the back of his teeth and shrugged. âI didnât really think it through beyond that. Got a bit carried away in the heat of the moment.â
âJesus, you didnât kill him, did you?â Tyler asked.
âOf course, I didnât kill him! Jesus Christ, son, what do you take me for?â Logan barked. He shifted his weight on his feet and shrugged. âI mean, I canât say I wasnât tempted. But, no.â
âThatâs something. But still, boss.â Tylerâs eyes darted left and right, like he was seeing all the potential consequences of Loganâs actions being played out before him. âThat could be career-ending. You could get your cards for that. You could get the bloody jail!â
Logan nodded slowly. Clearly, heâd come to the same conclusion some time ago. âAye. But Iâll worry about that later. For now, while I still have one, weâve got a job to do. Thereâs still a lot of people to talk to, and Bruce Anderson isnât going to find himself. We get this done, we find out who killed Iona, and then Detective Superintendent Hoon, the PCC, and whoever else wants to throw their oar in can do what they need to do.â
He necked the last of his cold tea, pulled a face, then clonked the mug down on the desk. âRight, you fit? Letâs go see if Roddy Mackayâll gieâs a swatch of his mucky videos.â
